Jedes der drei kurzen Stücke hat seinen ihm eigenen Charakter: verhaltene Spannung das erste, dunkles Grübeln das zweite und fröhliche Ausgelassenheit schließlich das dritte.
Wolfram Wagner

There’s no jazz mentioned in the CV of Austrian composer Wolfram Wagner (b. 1962), but his 3 Impromptus (plus the unconventional scalefingering that closes No. 1) make me think of a jazzman at work. They make a little material go a long way, with syncopations, repetitions and major/minor conflicts to the fore. Easy to learn, they would provide an ideal contemporary component for nervous intermediate-to-fairly-advanced recitalists: the music is reproduced from (neat) handwriting, and students spoiled by a diet of computer typefaces will complain. Ignore them, and make them sight-read this: there’s far less legible stuff out there in the real world!
