Concerto a quattro op. 5/8

Torelli, 1658 in Verona geboren, war Mitglied der berühmten "Accademia Filarmonica" in Bologna und des Orchesters von San Petronio als Violettaspieler, gleichzeitig studierte er Komposition bei Giacomo Antonio Perti. Reisen nach Wien und Ansbach, 1701 Rückkehr nach Bologna, wo er 1709 starb. Zu seinen Lebzeiten erschienen diverse Sonaten, Konzerte und Sinfonien im Druck.

The violin parts tend to run parallel, with the viola supporting the bass line. The standard largo with an adagio cadence is followed by a quick triple allegro, a short tiple largo in minims and a final allegro in common time. The violins never go above D in third position and the only technical challenge would be the continuous dotted figure in the last movement. This concerto would be a good choice for a school string group, where, because of its brevity, the whole piece could be played as part of a mixed ensemble programme.
