Excellent, the second Viennese School is alive and well, between these covers at least. Bischof is described here as various things, including a descendent of that school of Schoenberg and Berg via his teacher Apostel.   (…) The structure of the piece is given as a theme and 10 variations with a bar-count of each, so students of dodecaphony have a head start in working out the various tone-row permutations. Largely in two-part texture, this extremely dense and detailed piece of writing is always playable, and almost always very challenging. Imagine a rather busier and more exhibitionist Webern.
